Wow, we were in the capital city of England! Including the outer regions, it’s got a population of about 8 million people. Its variety of cultures and attractions is huge.
Can you imagine what one can do there? I bet you certainly can. Let your mind wander and make a plan for your visit there. Yet, I bet you wouldn’t think of going to a museum or a theatre …
We were quite shocked when we read through our schedule including a visit to museums and theatres!

But… can you imagine actually having fun there…?
Fun, in a museum, in a theatre??
Neither did we… but you’d be surprised.
We visited the legendary Globe Theatre and the Museum of Natural History. When we first entered the museum we were all blown away by its size! The entrance hall led to an escalator which disappeared in a plastic planet. From there on, we experienced a world of science that was easy to understand providing nearly endless information about our planet and the life on it. We saw a huge skeleton of a dinosaur, a simulation of an earthquake, the inside of a plant’s cell with the dimensions of a living room and the earth's plates movement on a display. This wasn’t just an important experience for a student preparing for his Abitur, but also an impression that sticks with you for, probably, the rest of your life.
„Money is honey“, a quote every student from the two English-Leistungskurse will remember of their trip to London. We had the pleasure to experience why plays were written in the past (for example to earn some money), why the Globe Theatre has no roof and how men had to play female roles. A funny man gave us a good introduction to Shakespeare’s play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” which we saw later that day.
Sadly we poor students did not have enough money for the more expensive tickets which included seats, so consequently we had to be tough and stand in the grounds of the Globe Theatre and watch the play for three long hours. But, there is one thing to be mentioned:
we WERE a part of the play.
During some of the scenes it could happen that actors would squeeze past you and your neighbour in order to escape!
Admittedly, your English does have to be good and you need to listen carefully to understand the plot of the story. But once you understand it you don’t want the break to kick in. It was simply HILARIOUS. The actors were funny, versatile and, who would have thought, all good musicians. It’s none of the boring theatre plays you would expect. It’s entertaining, funny and absorbing. We ticked it off on our “100 things to do before you die” list.
And, yes, we did experience the “nice” English weather. It’s raining men …!
However the sun came through every now and again and we even got sun burnt!
It was a great trip and we all enjoyed it!
